The UK announced funds to help Somalia forces

MOGADISHU (SD) – The UK government today announced the donation of £2.3 million to the United Nations Support Fund for Somalia (UNSOS), intended to support the country’s security forces.

The UK Ambassador to Somalia, Kate Foster, announced the contribution following meeting in Mogadishu with the Minister of Defense of the Somali government, Abdikadir Mohamed Noor.

“The UK’s £2.3 million contribution to the UNSOS Trust Fund will be crucial in maintaining SSF capabilities to over 10,000 Somali troops in the fight against Al-Shabaab”. British Ambassador to Somalia, Kate Foster said.

The Minister of Defense thanked the British government for its role in the reconstruction of the country and the support it provides to the Somali armed forces.

The UK supports Somalia in terms of security, and has also implemented training camps for government forces in the South West region, from which more than 2,000 soldiers who are part of the country’s military have graduated.

The Somali forces stepped up their fight against Al Shabaab in recent weeks and are planning to take over the country’s security in 2024 and are currently supported by ATMIS.
