The UN Security extends the AU Transition Mission mandate in Somalia

NY (SD)-The United Nations Security Council has extended the African Union Transition Mission mandate in Somalia (ATMIS) until December 31, 2024.

The Security Council, which approved Resolution 2748 by a majority vote, has authorized African Union member states to continue deploying 12,626 troops until the end of this year.

The resolution also encourages both current and new donors to support ATMIS. The United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS) manages the Trust Fund to support Somali security forces and the planned transition to replace ATMIS, allowing Somalia to strengthen its fight against Al-Shabaab.

The Council has requested the UN Secretary-General to continue providing logistical support through UNSOS and has decided to maintain support for 20,900 Somali National Army troops conducting joint or coordinated operations with ATMIS until December 31.
