Troop contributing countries discuss the future of ATMIS

Mogadishu (SD) – The Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (SRCC) in Somalia and Head of ATMIS, Ambassador Souef Mohamed El-Amine, held a consultative meeting with the Ambassadors of countries contributing troops to the ATMIS mission in Mogadishu.

During the meeting, they discussed the responsibilities of ATMIS in terms of enhancing the security situation in Somalia and the significant progress made in implementing the withdrawal of 2,000 AMISOM troops in June 2023.

They also reviewed the outcomes of the Joint Technical Assessment and preparations for the withdrawal of 3,000 troops before the “technical pause” of the ATMIS Phase 2 drawdown of 3,000 troops.

The meeting also highlighted the support AMISOM is providing in the fight against Al-Shabaab, focusing on the conditions and support required to ensure a successful transition.

Ambassador El-Amine and the Ambassadors expressed their commitment to the ongoing efforts to stabilize Somalia and strengthen its security institutions.
