Two senior al-Shabaab operatives defects to Somali gov’t

MOGADISHU (SD) – Somali National Army (SNA) has said that two al-Shabaab operatives have surrendered to its forces in southern Somalia amid intensified operations against al-Shabaab militant group in southern and central Somalia.

In two separate statements, SNA confirmed that two senior al-Shabaab fighters were fighting alongside the group’s fighters against Somali military forces and African Union troops.

One of the operatives was identified as Idris Abdullahi Moalim who turned in to the authorities Baidoa town.

“Idiris Abdullahi Moalim, a senior Alshabab operative has surrendered Somali National Army in Baidoa town of Baay region on Wednesday. He has been member of terror-group for 7 years,” the army said.

The army also said Asad Sharif Abukar aka Ayman had deserted al-Shabaab group. Ayman was said to have handed himself to Somali forces in Awdhegle town.

The development comes two days after Somali military destroyed three vehicles packed with explosives in southern Somalia.

Early this month, SNA captured some key areas in Qaycad, in Mudug region, after heavy fighting against Al-Shabaab fighters.

SNA and Galmudug forces recovered a large number of weapons and communication equipment during the operation in central Somalia.
