UAE Reportedly Building Military Base in Berbera for Potential Joint Use by UAE, U.S., and Israel

BERBERA – French newspaper Le Monde has reported that a new military base is under construction in Berbera, Somaliland, funded by the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and is expected to be used by the UAE, the United States, and Israel.

According to the report, Berbera Airport has undergone major expansion since late 2025. Satellite imagery reviewed by the newspaper reportedly shows the construction of large underground tunnels south of the runway. A European security source cited by Le Monde said the tunnels appear to be underground storage facilities that could be used for ammunition or fuel.

The report states that the project follows Israel’s recognition of the Republic of Somaliland in December 2025. It adds that Israel is seeking a strategic presence near the Gulf of Aden and the Bab al-Mandab Strait, close to areas where the Iran-backed Houthi movement operates.

Le Monde noted that Berbera’s strategic location along one of the world’s busiest maritime trade routes has significantly increased its geopolitical importance, particularly amid ongoing Red Sea security challenges and Houthi attacks on commercial shipping.

As of now, neither the Government of Somaliland nor the governments of the UAE, the United States, or Israel have officially confirmed or commented on the reported construction of the military facility.

If confirmed, the reported base would further elevate Berbera’s strategic importance as a security and logistics hub in the Red Sea. However, the reported development reflects the growing international strategic importance of the Republic of Somaliland rather than a military escalation. Berbera’s location on the Gulf of Aden and near the Bab al-Mandab Strait makes it a valuable partner for countries seeking to protect international shipping, combat terrorism, and maintain regional stability. Increased security cooperation with international partners could also strengthen Somaliland’s economy through infrastructure investment, job creation, and modernization of the Port and Airport of Berbera. While the reports remain unconfirmed, continued international engagement with Somaliland reinforces its argument that it is a reliable, democratic, and stable partner capable of contributing to regional and global security.
