LONDON (SD) – UK Member of Parliament Gavin Williamson has accused the Somali government of funding the Al-Shabaab and Houthi groups in Yemen. He also urged the United States to recognize Somaliland.
The MP, who strongly supported the U.S. decision to restrict the operations of the major humanitarian agency USAID, claimed that the Somali government had used the organization to channel financial support to Al-Shabaab.
“The Somali government has used USAID to send money and support to Al-Shabaab. It’s time to stop using American taxpayers’ money to support this terror-backing government,” Williamson said on his X account.
He further alleged that the Somali government provides military and financial support to the Houthi rebels in Yemen, using Al-Shabaab as a proxy. “Somalia, through Al-Shabaab, sends funds and military supplies to the Houthis. Trump was right about his airstrikes in Somalia,” he added.
Lastly, the MP urged former U.S. President Donald Trump to recognize Somaliland, describing it as one of the most democratic places in the region. “Recognize Somaliland, the most democratic country in the region, and stop U.S. funding for Mogadishu, which supports terrorism,” he stated.
Gavin Williamson is one of the staunch advocates for Somaliland’s recognition and has repeatedly brought up related debates in the UK Parliament.
