UN Security Council extends AMISOM mission by three months

NY (SD) – The United Nations Security Council today extended the mandate of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) by three months.

A statement from the Security Council stated that the situation in Somalia remains critical.

The UN Security Council has authorised “the Member States of the African Union to maintain the deployment of the African Union Mission in Somalia (Amisom) until 31 March 2022,” states the UN resolution 2614/2021.

The UN Security Council has also authorised “the Member States of the African Union to maintain the deployment of the African Union Mission in Somalia (Amisom) until 31 March 2022,” states the resolution.

The Un resolution added “authorises Amisom to take all necessary measures in full compliance with participating States’ obligations under international law, including international humanitarian law and international human rights law, and in full respect of the sovereignty, territorial integrity, political independence and unity of Somalia, to carry out its mandate, as set out.”

The UN resolution gives the Somali government and the African Union a chance to discuss the future of AMISOM operations in the future.

The Somali government and the African Union have recently clashed over the modalities for the AMISOM peacekeeping mission when its deadline of 31 December 2021 expires.
