NY (SD) -The United Nations Security Council has extended the arms embargo on Somalia until the end of the year.
The Security Council extended the arms embargo on Somalia, approving Resolution 9477 on November 15, 2023.
Addressing the situation in Somalia, the Security Council determined that the security situation in Somalia still poses a threat to international peace.
The Security Council also renewed the mandate of the Panel of Experts monitoring the arms embargo on Somalia until December 31, 2023.
The Somali government had previously requested the Security Council to lift the arms embargo, stating the need to acquire weapons to combat the Al-Shabaab group.
The arms embargo on Somalia was first imposed in January 1992 when the United Nations Security Council adopted Resolution 733, which prohibited the supply of weapons to Somalia.
