UNOCHA: 43,000 people have been displaced in Erigavo violence

MOGADISHU (SD) – The conflict between Somaliland forces and SSC-Khatumo forces in the city of Erigavo in the Sanag region has displaced nearly 43,000 people, including children, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA).

UNOCHA reported that the displaced people have reached Ceel Afweyn and Lasqoray in the Sanag region, with an unspecified number arriving in parts of Bossaso, Las Anod, Huddun, and Burao districts.

The UN agency’s report stated that the displaced families urgently need shelter, water, sanitation, food, healthcare, and education services. Humanitarian activities in Erigavo have been severely disrupted, with schools and businesses closed due to the conflict.

The tension between Somaliland and SSC-Khatumo started on December 14 in the southern part of Erigavo and surrounding areas. Since December 16, a calm situation has been reported in Erigavo after the withdrawal of SSC-Khatumo forces. However, residents indicate that tensions remain high, and the situation could escalate further.

The Ministry of Interior, Federal Affairs, and Reconciliation of Somalia has called for an immediate cessation of the conflict between Somaliland forces and SSC-Khatumo fighters and urged dialogue to restore peace in the region.
