WASHINGTON (SD) – US President Joe Biden has signed an order paving the way to redeploy hundreds of US troops back to Somalia and to carry out especial military operations .
Former President Donald Trump in surprise move, ordered the withdrawal of nearly 700 troops from Somalia in the last days of his term.
According to Adrienne Watson, the National Security Council spokeswoman, Mr. Biden signed off on the proposal by Defense Secretary Lloyd J. Austin III in early May.
“The decision to reintroduce a persistent presence was made to maximize the safety and effectiveness of our forces and enable them to provide more efficient support to our partners,” she said.
The National Security Council spokeswoman did not confirm the number of US troops heading back to Somalia, however experts believe the troops once again would help train Somalia’s forces and will likely launch attacks against Al Shabaab targets.
The decision by President Joe Biden comes as Somalia just last night elected President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud as the country’s 10th president.
