Somaliland jails a reporter for unfavorable report

Hargeisa (SD) – Journalist Abdikadir Osman Azayr (Codey), editor of Horn Cable TV, was sentenced to 1 year in jail and a 3-million in fine by the MarodiJeh regional court in Hargeisa today.

The journalist, who has been incarcerated since November, has been accused by the government of broadcasting unfavorable news about Egal International Airport.

While in jail, the journalist has faced a serious health conditions and was been denied both his doctor and family to see him.

The news comes after days later as the UN Representative raised the issue of press freedoms with the Somaliland president.

There has been an alarming uptick in journalist arrests in Somaliland since president Bihi took office two years ago.
