Washington(SD)-Somalia has been long engaged in efforts to get debt forgiven, and for the last few days there were ongoing meetings in Washington about that.
IMF managing director Kristalina Georgieva spoke at a meeting in Washongton yesterday with a Somali government delegation led by Prime Minister Hassan Ali Kheyre, she said the meeting was fruitful.
The agency’s statement said during the meeting that the Prime Minister reiterated that the Somali government is committed to restructuring and, in line with the ongoing SMP program, also stressed the completion of the ninth national plan recently approved by the cabinet.
The completion of the national development plan and reforms are part of the requirements of the Highly Disadvantaged Countries (HIPC) initiative.
IMF support strengthens government access and efforts to eliminate the Somali government’s debts by February 2020 to open the door to international financial institutions.
