Garowe (SD) – Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for Sunday’s suicide bombing in Garowe, in which Nugal regional governor Abdisalam Hassan Hirsi Gujir and a fellow officer were targeted while in their vehicle.

The Governor later succumbed to his injuries and died.

An al-Shabaab statement posted on the group’s website, said the attack was aimed at senior Puntland officials.

Al-Shabaab did not provide details, but claimed it was a successful operation.

Puntland security apparatus have information on the suicide bomber, according to the Puntland interior minister.

Al Shabab is known for targeting AMISOM and Somali federal troops in Sothern Somalia and are recently trying to infiltrate Puntland territory.
