Hargeisa (SD) – Somaliland President Muse Bihi met with the National Electoral Commission and discussed ways to overcome the differences that resulted in delaying the country’s elections.
“The president has informed the members of the committee about the obstacles in holding the Parliamentary and the municipal elections, and the electoral commission members themselves, and discussed at length the importance of the elections for the country and his interest in resolving all the issues obstructing the elections.
On their part the electoral commission members have provided the president with information on what they have accomplished during his term and plans for the future.” said a statement from the President’s spokesperson.
The president also met yesterday with opposition party leaders, and discussed with them in how to hold elections in the country.
Somaliland elections stalled due to disagreements between the opposition parties and the government regarding the legality of the new election commission.
An independent mediation committee has recently broken a resolution that would dismiss the current commission and reinstate the old one.
