Somali government rejects Kenya’s statement on bilateral agreement

Mogadishu(SD)-The Somali government has disputed the statement of Kenyan Minister of Foreign Affairs Monica Juma, saying the two presidents agreed to end the Maritime issue in a mutually acceptable manner.

Somali Minister of Foreign Affairs Ahmed Awad Isse said the maritime case should be resolved at the ICJ court.

He also said that the Somali government has repeatedly reiterated its position on the issue of the maritime at al the international gatherings, including at the UN, the latest agreement being signed by the two presidents of Somalia and Kenya is no different than the previous one and the Government of Somalia remains in its original position on this issue.

Many Somalis are skeptical of the proposed agreement between the two presidents Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo and Uhuru Kenyatta and a statement from the Kenyan Foreign Minister that it was agreed to end the Sea Case in a consensus format.

In recent months there has been a strong pressure on the Somali government to push for a withdrawal from the Maritimes case and the two governments resolve issues through negotiations.
