Somalia: Government disbands disputed election commissions

Mogadishu (SD) – The Somali federal government has disbanded federal and regional election commissions, and dispute resolution commissions formed following the September 17th election agreement.

Acting Deputy Prime Minister Mahdi Mohamed Guled Khadar, held an Iftar dinner with the committee members after Prime Minister Roble summand them to his office today.

Mahdi Guled told members that they had been disbanded, and thanked them for what he called “the long efforts they have shown during their six months in office.”

National and regional election commissions consisted of members from central government and Galmudug, HirShabelle, Southwest and Banadir administrations.

The Somali government institutions recently secured a two-year extension and reinstated the National Electoral Commission led by Halima Yarey.

Somalia’s opposition groups and donor governments have all rejected the Somali government’s two year mandate extension.
