Berbera (SD) – Berbera City Council in their first session re-elected mayor Abdishakur Mohamud Idin and Nur Abdi Jama as elected deputy mayor, nullifying the opposition parties commitment to unseat him.
The former mayor of Berbera, who was re-elected to lead the city, received eight of the 13 votes cast in the by-elections.
Nur Abdi Jama (Nur Adde) of the Wadani opposition party was also elected as his deputy.
Abdishakur Idin’s re-election was widely welcomed by his party, Kulmiye, as a victory for his party.
“The re-election of the Berbera district council chairman is the culmination of the Kulmiye party’s plan to regain control of the country. It is the third time that Kulmiye party will rule the country, ”said the party spokesman.
Kulmiye party spokesman Abdinasir Buni added, “Once again, Berbera is moving forward, it is the victory of the Somaliland nation.”
Somaliland recently held historic local and parliamentary elections contested by the Kulmiye, Wadani & UCID parties.
