Abiy Ahmed’s Plan to mediate between Somalia and Somaliland fails

Mogadishu (SD) – Ethiopia’s prime minister, Abiy Ahmed, has in the past been spending lots efforts to mediate between the presidents of Somalia and Somaliland, which have ultimately failed, according to The Reporter.

According to the Newspaper, The Reporter, Abiy’s efforts have failed, as the two parties were reluctant to meeting directly.

The newspaper noted that in recent days the leaders of Somalia and Somaliland have been exchanging rhetoric over the airwaves, cementing the failure of Abiy’s plan to bring the two sides together.

The Reporter newspaper sited the raging tensions between the federal government and Somaliland as throwing the prospect of dialogue into black hole.

Abiy Ahmed has been in the process of launching new talks in recent times with the help of the US ambassador to Somalia, to no avail.

Political tensions between Somalia and Somaliland appear to be pushing the leaders of both sides to come to the negotiating table.

The presidents of Somalia and Somaliland unexpectedly met for the first time in Addis Ababa in February of this year.

Somaliland enjoys relative peace and democracy since it negated on its unity with Somalia in 1991, as Somalia descended into political chaos.

Since taking office in 2018, Ethiopia’s leader has worked to achieve a number of diplomatic breakthroughs in the long-turbulent Horn of Africa region.
