WASHINGTON (SD) -General Michael Langley, Commander of U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM), stated that despite a deteriorating security environment, the U.S. remains a strong ally, focusing on helping African nations shape their paths toward peace and security.
Langley’s mission centers on collaborative efforts directly engaging African leaders, reflecting AFRICOM’s commitment to a hands-on approach to strengthen regional security partnerships.
During his recent visit to Somalia, Gen. Langley met with President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to assess ongoing counter-terrorism plans and the fight against al-Shabaab in the region.
This visit underscores a key U.S. policy prioritizing face-to-face diplomacy with African leaders to ensure that military and security support aligns with regional needs and goals.
In high-level discussions, the General explored how the U.S. could continue supporting Somalia’s fight against al-Shabaab while building the Somali National Army (SNA) to enable self-sufficiency.
Langley acknowledged the challenges in enhancing local forces but expressed optimism about Somalia’s progress under President Mohamud’s leadership.
