MOGADISHU (SD) -The U.S. Ambassador to Somalia, Ambassador Richard Riley, met with opposition politicians from the South West State administration who the Somali presidential palace, Villa Somalia, had recently summoned.
This meeting comes amid political tensions between the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) and South West State. There is growing speculation that President Abdiaziz Laftagareen of South West State plans to extend his term, leading to heightened political rivalry.
In a statement, Ambassador André expressed the United States’ support for free, fair, and inclusive elections in Somalia. This clear message underscores the U.S. commitment to democratic processes in the country.
Villa Somalia summoned the opposition politicians from South West State. It appears to be using the opposition forum as leverage in its conflict with President Laftagareen.
