Mogadishu (SD) – The Somali Militant group Al Shabab in a statement today claimed the slaying of former Somali National Goalkeeper Abdiweli Olad Gatamow in Afgoye district yesterday.

Gatamow was murdered by armed gunmen, while praying Taraweeh in an Afgoye Mosque.

Al-Shabaab said in the statement that they killed a Somali federal government official, in a special operation carried out by their militants.

“In a special operation carried out by the mujahideen forces in the Afgoye district of Lower Shabelle, resulted in the killing of an official with the Somali infidel group,” al-Shabaab said in a statement.

It’s worth noting, that Gatamow was not a member of the federal government of Somalia, but rather was the head of the Somali football federation in Afgoye, independent of the federal government of Somalia and politics in general.

The killing of this famous goalkeeper during the holy month of Ramadan caused an uproar among Somalis everywhere.
