British government names new ambassador to Somalia

Mogadishu (SD) – The British government has replaced its ambassador to Somalia, Ben Fender, with a new ambassador, Kate Foster.

“Ms. Kate Foster OBE has been appointed Her Majesty’s Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Somalia in succession to Mr. Ben Fender OBE. who will be transferring to another Diplomatic Service appointment. Ms. Foster will take up her appointment during February 2021.” Said an Statement from Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office.

Ambassador Ben Fender was appointed to Somalia on January 30, 2019, and has served in Somalia for almost two years.

Kate Foster, the new British ambassador will be the second female ambassador to Somalia since 2012.

The appointment of the new UK ambassador comes at a time when Somalia is embroiled in controversy over the 2021 elections.

The UK is one of the major country’s that supports Somalia’ recovery efforts.
