British MP: We didn’t like Somaliland decision to unite with Somalia

London (SD) – The 60th Anniversary celebrations of Somaliland’s Independence Day from Britain was held in London, Hargeisa and around the world this week.

The ceremony held in London at the Somaliland Embassy in London was attended by Baroness Nicholson, who is a Member of the House Of Lords and the Prime Minister’s Trade Envoy to Iraq, Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan.

Baroness Nicholson gave a speech at the party saying “Sixty years ago when Somaliland gained its independence from the United Kingdom, Somaliland at that time was recognized 35 states, including all 5 permanent governments of the Security Council, five days later, Somaliland united with Somalia, even though us British did not like that decision. “

Somaliland has since recanted its decision to unite with Somalia, effectively declaring its independence on May 1991 after the Republic plunged into chaos after the fall of dictator Siyad Barre.

The unrecognized state is seem as a democratic enclave with minimum help from the international community.
