Somali Parliament approves zoning law

Mogadishu (SD) – Members of Federal Parliament of Somalia have unanimously passed a House and Senate resolution regarding constituency and electoral districts.

The 7th session of the 12th Parliament opened with 150 MPs and was Chaired by the Speaker of the Federal Parliament, Abdirahman Mohamed Mursal Sheikh.

Parliamentarian Ibrahim Isak Yarow, chairman of the interim joint committee for the implementation of the national election law, had read the provisions of the bill and included recommendations made by the council and asked the House to approve it.

The Speaker of the House announced that 144 MPs have approved the bill, two lawmakers have rejected and four abstained.

In the past few days there has been an uproar about this bill, with some MPs seats relocated outside of the constituency.

The regional administrations have already rejected the bill, and there has been widespread skepticism about the action taken by MPs today.
