Denmark forgives Somalia’s debts

MOGADISHU (SD) The Minister of Finance of the Federal Government of Somalia, Mr. Bihi Iman Egeh, and the Danish Ambassador to Somalia, Mr. Steen Sonne Andersen, jointly signed an agreement today in Mogadishu, officially forgiving the debt that Denmark had previously held against Somalia.

This agreement follows extensive negotiations that the Somali Finance Minister conducted with members of the Paris Club, which had previously decided in March 2024 to forgive Somalia’s debts. This decision required Somalia to negotiate individually with the creditor countries.

Minister Bihi Iman Egeh issued a brief statement following the agreement, saying, “The fruits of the financial reform program and the achievements in the debt relief process have come to fruition. We extend our gratitude to the Government of Denmark, a valuable partner in Somalia’s financial progress.”
