MOGADISHU (SD) – Denmark’s Ambassador to Somalia, Steen Sonne Andersen, posted on his X/Twitter account about his meeting with Somalia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Ahmed Moalim Fiqi. The discussion focused on clarifying remarks made during Somaliland’s elections, Somalia’s territorial integrity, and cooperation between the two countries.
Ambassador Andersen described the meeting as fruitful, addressing key issues raised by his earlier remarks about the Somaliland elections, which he described as unintended.
“Yesterday, I had a productive dialogue with Somalia’s Foreign Minister, Ambassador Ahmed Moalim Fiqi, to clarify comments related to Somaliland’s elections and address concerns stemming from unintended remarks,” the Ambassador said.
He reiterated Denmark’s support for Somalia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, which includes Somaliland.
“Denmark continues to respect the unity and territorial integrity of Somalia, with Somaliland being part of this union,” he added.
Ambassador Andersen emphasized the strong friendship between Denmark and Somalia, highlighting shared priorities such as state-building, climate change adaptation, and ensuring peace and security.
“Denmark and Somalia remain close allies and partners, sharing important priorities in state-building, addressing climate change, and promoting peace and security,” he concluded.
The Ambassador’s remarks followed an invitation from Somalia’s Foreign Minister for him to clarify earlier comments where he referred to Somaliland as an independent state. This step was viewed positively as it demonstrated the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ commitment to safeguarding Somalia’s sovereignty and unity.
