LONDON (SD) – Sir Gavin Williamson, the former UK Secretary of Defense, stated that Donald Trump recently held discussions with his team regarding the recognition of Somaliland, a move that would mark a significant political milestone, according to The Independent.
Sir Gavin expressed confidence that Trump would take this step once he assumes office in January.
He also highlighted the geostrategic importance of Somaliland, particularly concerning the Red Sea.
As a leading advocate for Somaliland’s recognition, the former UK Defence Secretary has been spearheading a broad campaign in support of its independence. Somaliland, a region formerly colonized by Britain, has spent over 30 years lobbying for separation from the rest of Somalia.
This development comes as Somaliland recently conducted a free and fair election, in which opposition leader Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi emerged victorious with 53% of the vote.
The recognition of Somaliland remains contentious, and such a move could significantly impact regional politics according to Somalia.
