Djibouti (SD) – Djibouti celebrates 44th anniversary of the country’s independence from France in 1977.

The event, which is an annual event to showcase the struggle of the Djiboutian people for independence and how to strengthen development efforts, coincides with the fifth term of President Ismail Omar Guelleh.

At a ceremony at the Presidential Palace, President Guelleh greeted a contingent of troops and laid the foundation stone of Djibouti’s Independence Monument.

′′ This celebration is first and foremost a moment of gathering and praying. For all those who made the ultimate sacrifice. For those heroes and heroes who died to give birth to our sovereignty ” President Guelleh said.

Adding ′′ Our sovereignty is an acquired conquest of high struggle, the beginning of an adventure embarked on the long path of consolidation. We must redouble our commitment to assert ourselves and to strengthen ourselves in our sovereignty “.

In a referendum held on May 8, 1977, the people of Djibouti voted for independence, and a month later on June 27, 1977, elections were held for the first President of Djibouti. Mr. Hassan Guled Abtidon was elected.
