Hargeisa (SD) – The Director General of the Somaliland Ministry of Health, Dr. Mohamed Abdi Hergeye, says they have high hopes for the eradication of malaria in Somaliland in the near future.
Hergeye also noted that there are no funding from agencies for the fight against malaria, but that the ministry will pay for the eradication of malaria.
“The Malaria program is different from other diseases, in that it doesn’t have partner agencies, but the implementation and management of it is up to the ministry.” Said Hergeye.
Dr. Hergeye continued “However, it is a project that has gone through the control phase, and now the disease is on the verge of eradicating it from some of the districts, and the eastern districts are effected the most, and in the future we want to focus on the western districts.”
The director did not say what the cost of this health project would be and how it would be addressed, only saying “I hope that one day we will eradicate malaria in our country. ”
