Somalia and AU to discuss post 2021 Amisom-Somalia engagement

MOGADISHU (SD) – Somali government and African Union (AU) have agreed to resume plans to complete post 2021 So.alia-Amisom engagement.

In a statement, Somali government said representatives from Somalia, African Union Commission and AMISOM have concluded a consultation meeting  in Mogadishu.

Somalia was represented by Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur, Minister of Defense, Abdisaid Muse Ali, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, and Abdullahi Mohamed Nor, Minister of Internal Security.

 The AU and Amisom were represented by Dr. Alhaji Sarjoh Bah, the Director of Conflict Management of AUC and Ambassador Francisco Madeira, the Special Representative of the Chairperson of AU Commission.

During the meeting, the sides focused on the future of a reconfigured AU-Transition Mission in Somalia.

Both sides agreed on a set of principles which will guide the post 2021 FGS- AU engagement. 

They also agreed for the technical teams to resume and to finalise the technical work no later than 11 February 2021.

According to the statement, Somalia expressed its gratitude and appreciation for the sacrifices made by AMISOM and TCCs who have alongside Somali Security Forces fought hard to achieve lasting peace and stability in Somalia.

Somalia also underscored that AMISOM must evolve into an AU Transition Mission and that the revised STP is the result of a Somali-owned and led process which determines security transition priorities through to the end of 2023.
