JIGJIGA (SD) – The Somali Regional State Government of Ethiopia announced the end of a four-day military operation in the Afdheer region, where hundreds of Al-Shabaab fighters entered.
“The Al-Shabaab terrorist group that attacked from the Aato area 4 days ago and entered the Afdheer region were killed after the State Special Forces surrounded them in Hulhul area.” said the state government in a released statement.
The statement issued by the Security Committee of the Somali Regional Government stated that the group’s intention was to cross over to the Oromia Autonomous Region to join up with a terrorist group called Shane.
“The desperate Al-Shabaab terrorists did not reach their destination, all of their 13 vehicles were burned, and all their weapons, communications and equipment were seized.” said the state government in a released statement.
The statement added that at least 100 Al-Shabaab fighters were killed during the operation, although this could not be independently verified.
Al Shabaab’s attack this week in Ethiopia, a first of its kind, has become an additional threat to the region during a severe drought, that threatens millions in the Horn of Africa.
