Farmajo hints at term extension amidst political uncertainty in Somalia

MOGADISHU (SD) – Somali President, Mohamed Farmajo has today told the Lower House that there will be no power vacuum in the country till elections take place the horn of Africa nation.

Farmajo said the fate of the country lies with the parliament as the federal and regional leaders failed to end their differences over electoral process.

“Parliament has the authority to determine the future of this country but there will be no power vacuum,” the president said.

He accused leaders of Puntland and Jubbaland states of refusing to implement electoral process deal sign last year.

“The agreement inked on 17th September 2020 was written by Saed Abdullahi Deni [Puntland leader] and the rest were just watching… now Jubaland and Puntland have refused [a deal], they even refused when I said ‘don’t shame us [in the eyes] of the world’,” Somalia president Farmajo told the MPs.

He said his government is ready to hold elections based on September 17 agreement signed by the federal government and its member states.

“We are ready to implement the election deal and we urge you (members of the parliament) to support us in the efforts to convince your brothers (leaders of the regional states) to play their role in the elections,” he said.

The remarks of the president comes hours after returned from Dhusamareb town after talks on election dispute failed.
