MOGADISHU (SD) – Today, members of both houses of the Federal Parliament of Somalia held a session at Villa Hargeysa, where they approved the members of the National Electoral and Boundary Commission, which had been endorsed by the Council of Ministers the previous night.
The session started with confusion and disruption, as some parliamentarians from both houses created disturbances. For several minutes, there was chaos within the parliament chamber.
The Speaker of the House of the People, Sheikh Adan Madobe, who chaired the session, announced that 169 members of parliament had approved the electoral commission members, while 6 members opposed the decision. He added that no one remained silent during the vote.
The newly approved electoral commission is tasked with preparing for the one-person-one-vote elections. However, opponents argue that such elections are not feasible at the moment, and instead, they are advocating for an extension of the current government’s term.
