Hargeisa (SD) – Somaliland journalist Barwaqo Hassan Hajji Farah, was arrested in Hargeisa today, according to Sahan TV chairman Ahmed Heello.
Barwaqo was covering women protesting Hargeisa court’s disappointing sentencing of the seven men who raped Awo Harir Rage, a young woman at the Hargeisa Orphanage.
The judiciary was heavily criticized for their ruling that give light sentences to the convicted rapists.
Hargeisa police reportedly also arrested some women demonstrators.
Speaking at the University of Burao, Somaliland President Muse Bihi recently promised that his government would bring to justice those found guilty of rape.
The police did not yet update the public on today’s arrests and demonstrations.
