MOGADISHU (SD) – Somalia’s new President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has for the first time announced his plans for the first 100 days and the priorities of his government.
In an exclusive interview with VOA’ Somali service, President elect Hassan Sheikh Mohamud said he would take steps to ensure security, political stability and economic recovery in the country.
“We want to review review the country’s outdated laws governing security agencies, we want a comprehensive agreement between the government and the states to federalize key issues,” he said.
The president-elect said security issues will be given priority and plans will be implemented to improve security in the country, especially in the capital.
“We want to ensure security in Mogadishu and in all security matters, we welcome anyone who can help us.” said the president.
President Hassan added that they will review a plan to move beyond the controversial indirect election system.
“The Somali people do not want to see a repeat of the controversial indirect election system. At the end of our 2026 term, a consensus system other than indirect elections will be ready. ” added President Hassan Sheikh.
The statement from the president on his plans for the first 100 days was not accompanied by further details.
