HARGEISA (SD) – Somaliland President Muse Bihi Abdi, who addressed the May 18th commemoration today in Hargeisa, congratulated Somalia’s newly elected President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.
Muse Bihi, who has been at loggerheads with Somalia’s outgoing President Farmajo, has called on President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud not to interfere in Somaliland’s affairs.
“We welcome the peaceful election and the peaceful transfer of power between the two presidents yesterday. We want you to be at peace with each other and pray for each other, ”said Muse Bihi.
The President of Somaliland also congratulated the new President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, on his election and wished him well in his new role.
He added that the federal government see Somaliland as a part of Somalia, and said that they only want peace between the two sides.
“After 31 years of separation, we have not received any acknowledgement from our brothers and sisters. They all agree that we are a region that cannot claim independence,” Bihi said.
The President spoke at length as to why Somaliland has regain its independence and the fruitful struggle of the people to free themselves from the tyranny of the long-fought dictatorship.
The Somaliland president’s remarks show flexibility in dealing with the new Somali government in Mogadishu.
