IGAD welcomes Guelleh’s Sool mediation efforts

Addis Ababa Feb 03, 2023 (SD) – The IGAD regional organization has commended the peace efforts of the President of Djibouti, Ismail Omar Guelleh, in the ongoing tensions in the city of Las Anod in the Sool region.

The Secretary-General of IGAD, Workneh Gebeyehu, stated that the situation in Las Anod has caused concern and that a peaceful solution is necessary.

He also praised Guelleh’s mediating efforts and encouraged him to continue. In recent days, there has been tension between the Somaliland military and the local population in Las Anod due to several murders, leading to riots and loss of life.

The city was eventually taken over by armed tribal militias who forced out the Somaliland military. The leaders of the Sool region and some parts of Sanaag and Cayn, who are attending the conference in Laascaanood, have stated that they will not accept mediation by the President of Djibouti.

The spokesperson for the 33-member committee managing the conference, Abdirisaq Hassan Falaalug, told the BBC Somali that they will not accept any mediation at this time after IGAD announced that President Guelleh would mediate the Laascaanood situation.

The tension in Laascaanood has caused people to flee the city, with the Somaliland military outside of the city, and armed local forces patrolling the streets of the city.
