Iranian Detainees in Somalia released

Tehran (SD) – The government of Iran today confirmed that the federal government of Somalia handed over fishermen who were held prisoners in Somalia.

The fishermen were initially kidnapped by pirates in Somali waters and were later transferred to the Al Shabaab group.

Iran said that the fishermen will be returned to their country after negotiations and measures taken by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iran.

The 20 fishermen were held in Somalia for 8 years and are from Iran and Pakistan.

Somali fishermen face numerous challenges from foreigners fishing illegally in the country’s waters.
