Journalist arrested for reporting khat abuse among national forces

MOGADISHU (SD)-Civil society has reacted strongly to the arrest of journalist Cali Nur Salad, the director of one of the local TV stations in Somalia.

Independent media leaders held a press conference in Mogadishu today, condemning the journalist’s arrest and calling it an unlawful act. They criticized how the arrest was carried out, stating that it did not adhere to legal procedures.

The Somali police released a photo of the journalist at the police headquarters and issued a brief statement on the Banadir regional police’s Facebook page. They accused him of misconduct, fabricating falsehoods, and insulting the national forces.

The journalist had recently posted a video on his Facebook page discussing the negative impact of khat on the national forces. It is widely believed that this post is the reason for his arrest.
