Kenya: Al Shabaab is in control of 60% of Mandhera

Mandhera July 22, 2023 (SD) – The Governor of Mandera County, in Kenya Mohamed Adan Khalif, today announced that at least 60% of Mandera County is now under the control of the militant group Al-Shabaab.

Mohamed stated that the presence of militants had hindered security and development efforts in certain parts of the region.

The Governor spoke following a security meeting held to address the ongoing insurgency by Al-Shabaab in the northern part of the region, and the leaders urged for measures to be taken to counter the threat.

The security conference was attended by regional governors and a committee of security officials from four counties bordering Kenya and Somalia.

The district leaders who have experienced attacks from Al-Shabaab also shared insights on how to combat the increasing attacks by the terrorist group.

The leadership of Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Lamu emphasized the need for a joint effort to counter Al-Shabaab and called for community engagement in preventing radicalization.

Finally, Governor Mohamed Adan Khalif emphasized that his administration, while committed to providing public services, it could not and urged for support from the Kenyan government to enhance security measures in the region.
