January 17, 2023 (SD) – The government of Congo has arrested a Somali man, who is suspected to be a member of the Ugandan militant group Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), in connection with an attack on a church in the northern Kivu region on Sunday, where 10 people were killed.

The man, whose name has not been released by the Congolese authorities, but Kenyan Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU) identified him as Abdirizaq Muqtar Garaad, a 29-year-old Kenyan national from Wajir in northern Kenya.

The attack, which took place in the city of Kasindi near the border with Uganda, also injured at least 39 people, according to Congo’s army (FARDC). The ADF has not claimed responsibility for the attack, but the Congolese military has linked the group to the attack.

In January 2022, another Kenyan Salim Rashid Mohamed aka Chotara was also arrested in DRC by Congolese authorities for alleged terrorist activities.
