MOGADISHU (SD) -The African Union Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) reported that two soldiers were killed and others injured in a landmine explosion in the Lower Shabelle region.
The remotely controlled landmine targeted a convoy comprising Ugandan troops and the Somali National Army on the road connecting Mogadishu to Barawe.
The explosion occurred yesterday, specifically affecting ATMIS troops, with no harm to the Somali National Army personnel. Reuters, citing Ugandan military sources, confirmed the casualties, including a Ugandan military officer, with six others injured and receiving treatment in Mogadishu.
Lieutenant Colonel Patrick Opio Awany died in the explosion near El-Wareegow village, approximately 70 kilometers southwest of Mogadishu, as confirmed by UPDF spokesperson Ibrahim Kasule Sekitto. The attack was attributed to Al-Shabaab militants, with the targeted forces relocating from the Lower Shabelle region to Mogadishu.
