MOGADISHU (SD) – Today, Members of the People’s Assembly of the Federal Parliament of Somalia held their 14th extraordinary session at the Parliament headquarters, chaired by the Speaker of the People’s Assembly, Sheikh Adan Mohamed Nur (Madobe).
The session, attended by 146 members, had as its agenda the first reading of the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child. The Minister of Women and Family Affairs of the Federal Government of Somalia, Khadija Mohamed Al-Makhzoumi, explained the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child and its articles to the members of the People’s Assembly.
Since this was only the first reading and no debate was opened, the Assembly members questioned the minister about the charter’s general principles and its potential budgetary impacts.
Finally, Speaker Sheikh Adan Mohamed Nur (Madobe), who closed the session, instructed the relevant working committees to prepare the first reading and return it to the Assembly for debate.
The African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child contradicts Islamic Sharia, and the parliamentarians have demanded that this law be returned.
