Hargeisa (SD) – Abdirahman Fantastic, a Somaliland journalist, said he was attacked and injured by men he said were at a house in Hargeisa’s Masalha neighborhood.

The men who attacked the journalist were later identified as members of the Somaliland army.

The reporter posted a picture of an eye injury on his Facebook page.

“As you can see in the picture, there were people in a house in Hargeisa’s Masalha, later identified as army had inflicted these visible and other wounds on me and I will send you a video explaining the matter.” Said the journalist.

Eryal TV said in a statement “The management and staff of Eryal TV are deeply saddened by Eryal TV’s news editor Abdirahman Abdillahi Fanatic’s attack.”

Adding “The management and staff of Eryal TV are calling for immediate justice for their collogue Abdirahman Fantastic.”

It is not clear the motive behind the beating, but the journalist said he had sustained serious injuries to his left eye, as well as lower extremities.

The Somaliland government has not yet commented on the attack on the journalist Fantastic.

Somaliland journalists face similar abuses despite the country’s constitution guaranteeing press freedoms.
