MARKA (SD) – Seven children were killed on the spot this week in Somalia’s Lower Shabelle region after suspected ordnance which they were playing with exploded, medical sources have said.

11 other children were injured. Medical sources in a hospital in Shanbalood told the media they had received the bodies of seven children and admitted 11 others who sustained serious injuries.

Dr. Mohamed Jim’aale said out of those admitted, three lost their limbs adding the hospital has been overwhelmed and cannot handle the nature of injuries sustained by the children.

He called for support from Mogadishu so that the children can be transferred for specialized treatment.

The children were ferried to Shanbalood hospital from Golweyn hospital near the coastal city of Marka.
