MOGADISHU (SD) – Somali president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo has today signed resolution allotting 13 seats at the Upper House to Banaadir Region which encompasses the capital Mogadishu into law.

The proposal which was adopted by the Parliament last year allows Somali capital to get representation in the country’s parliament.

The assent for country’s most populated region to get representation in the country’s parliament comes at when the country’s elections hung in balance as the political stakeholders are at loggerheads over the electoral process.

Elections for Senators are conducted by the FMS parliaments.

It is not clear how the Banaadir one will be conducted since it does not have an elected parliament.

Based on the 2016 arrangement negotiated by then President Hassan Sheikh Mohamed and FMS leaders, Puntland and Somaliland were allocated 11 seats while the rest of the FMS got eight seats each.

Henceforth, president Farmajo’s move will make Banaadir to secure highest representative in the Upper House.
