Hargeisa (SD) – The president of Somaliland and the leaders of the three national parties met with the deputy chair of Somaliland House of Elders, discussed issues related to the upcoming elections and how the House of Elders would agree with the three parties, the Government and the Commission, in holding the elections on May 31, 2021.
The deputies of the House of Elders have agreed with the President and the leadership of the three national parties on aligning the new timing of the elections scheduled for 31 May 2021 and the term of the House of Representatives.
“It has been announced that the election will take place on 31 May 2021, and it is before the Senate, they agreed to approve that date, they were waiting for the Speaker of the House of Elders Saleban Karim to arrive on Sunday” said Chairman Faisal.
Meanwhile, various sources say that members of the Somaliland House of Elders are expected to hold an extraordinary session this week to reconcile the Electoral Commission’s new timetable for holding parliamentary and local elections in the country, and the extension of the term of the House of Representatives, but it is not known whether the House of Elders will stick to its previous decision to hold elections by the end of 2021.
The Somaliland public is eagerly awaiting the decision of the Somaliland House of Elders and the response to the requests of the President and the parties to hold elections on May 31.2021.
Elections expected to take place in Somaliland earlier this year have been delayed for years, and it is unclear what the House of Elders will do with the new election timetable.
