Presidential Candidate Irro confirms protest and sends warning to security forces

HARGEISA (SD) – In Hargeisa, the capital of Somaliland, large demonstrations are been planned by supporters of the opposition Wadani and UCID parties, opposed to the disruption of the presidential election process.

Wadani Party candidate for the presidency of Somaliland Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi (Irro), said they are holding a peaceful demonstration to express their concerns about the country’s electoral process.

Candidate Irro said demonstrations are a constitutional right, and to support the fledgling democracy and called on the army not to obstruct the protesters but to ensure the safety of the protesters.

“Demonstration and freedom of public expression is a constitutional right, and it will happen and no one has the right to oppose it, and the planning and preparation for a peaceful rally is going on. Security agencies have a duty in protecting the rights of citizens, including the right to freedom demonstrate,” said Abdirahman Irro.

Candidate Abdirahman Irro insisted the election take place on time, and warned security forces against meddling in politics.

“I would like to warn the armed forces not to get involved in the ongoing political disputes in the country.” Irro said at a presser today “The perpetrators will be punished and held accountable, and neither the public nor the law will forgive them. On November 13 2022, there will be a change of leadership led by public,”.

The ruling Kulmiye party and opposition parties have been at loggerheads over the postponement of the presidential election, and Muse Bihi’s government has warned opposition parties against holding demonstrations.
