Puntland denies hijacking of a ship pound for Mogadishu

Bossaso (SD) – Puntland State of Somalia has denied that a ship was hijacked in the Gardafuu region, but added that its forces suspected the ship disarmed its security, the ship bound for Mogadishu from the UAE.

The Regional state Minister of Fisheries, Mohamud Haji Salah, told local media that three rifles belonging to the ship’s security guards had been confiscated by soldiers.

The state minister added that the ship was stationed off shore for three days, the government then sent soldiers to check on it and said the weapons would be returned and the ship would be released.

The suspected hijacking made news around the world as pirates were thought to be eradicated by international forces monitoring and escorting ships in the area for years now.
