Taiwan slams Somalia and China, defends diplomatic ties with Somaliland

Taipei (SD) – The Taiwanese government has reacted strongly to statements made by China and Somalia, after the two countries condemned the diplomatic exchange between the Republic of Somaliland and Taiwan.

Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Joanne Ou responded strongly to criticism from Beijing, saying China had never ruled Taiwan not even for a single day, and do not have the right to represent the people of Taiwan or interfere in the countries with which they forge relations with.

Taiwan’s foreign ministry spokeswoman compared the Mogadishu government’s claim of ‘one Somalia principle’ and the ‘one China principle’ are both funny and absurd.

The spokeswoman added that the Republic of Somaliland has held three elections since regaining its independence from Somalia, adding that the Republic of Somaliland and Taiwan are deepening their relationship, which she described as based on shared values, freedom and democracy.

The spokeswoman’s response came days after both China and Somalia criticized the Taiwan’s establishment of a Representative office in Hargeisa, Somaliland.
